Five Hair & Makeup Mistakes to Avoid Before a Boudoir Photoshoot

So you may have just booked your first boudoir photoshoot, how exciting! Yet lots of people worry about how to prepare when planning their photoshoot. Before you start to panic about how to prepare your hair and skin, I am here to help you every step of the way.

There’s loads of advice in your style guide when you receive it, but I thought I would give you a handy guide full of things to avoid before you visit us!

1 - not washing your hair at the right time

The first on the list is one of the most asked questions… when should I wash my hair? Well, everyone has different hair types and lengths so it depends on how your hair lasts after it is washed. For example, if you know your hair gets oily or greasy quite quickly, wash and blow dry it on the morning of your shoot. Or, if you know your hair is too soft to style when freshly washed, then do it the night before to give it time to settle before we style it at the studio. I always ask that you arrive with clean and dry hair, without too much product in it so that we can start from scratch.

2 - buying new makeup products for the shoot

The next mistake to avoid is panic buying hair and makeup products. Fear not, we have everything you need here at the studio! We have a range of makeup to suit all skin types, tones and preferences! Although, if there is a piece of makeup that you absolutely adore such as a signature lip colour, or favourite blush colour that makes you feel yourself, bring it along and we can have a look together.

3 - making big changes to your beauty routine

One of the most important things to remember is not to change too much in the run up to your photoshoot. There’s no need to take on a 10 step skincare routine, start self tanning, or change your hair colour before your photoshoot. There’s nothing worse than disliking the result, or even causing an allergic reaction to a new product! As a general rule to go by - if you don’t already do it, there’s no need to start just because you have a Boudoir photoshoot coming up.

4 - wearing tight fitting clothes to the studio

On the morning of your shoot we ask you to come with clean hair and no makeup, but another thing to think about is wearing clothes that don’t leave a strong line or mark. Jeans and socks are the worst culprits for this! Often it’s best (and more comfortable!) to come in a pair of seamless leggings or your favourite joggers and avoid socks if you can.

5 - trying to be someone else

My final piece of advice, and the best thing you can do to prepare for a shoot, is to just be yourself. The reason you have booked a boudoir photoshoot is to improve your confidence - so embrace the process, enjoy the experience and celebrate the person you are today!
