Taboo FAQs: Ten things you’re too embarrassed to ask your boudoir photographer.

Most of our clients have never done a boudoir photoshoot before, everyone is nervous, and many women say they’re too scared to ask things. Remember, you’re not alone! I’m here to help you every step of the way, there’s no such thing as a silly question, and there’s no need to be embarrassed. Whatever you’re thinking has probably been asked before, and even if not - I’m open minded and not easily shocked.

Here are 10 of the most common questions clients are scared to ask me before their boudoir photoshoot:

1. do i need to have a bikini wax before a photoshoot?

No - though many clients do choose to.

Hair removal is a completely personal decision: some clients wax before their shoot, others shave or use hair removal cream, and some clients decide to remain au naturel. Whatever you choose is OK with us, it’s all about how you want to appear in the photos. If you do decide to wax, it’s best to book your appointment a few days before the shoot to avoid a rash. In fact, if you have time you could book a wax 6-8 weeks before the shoot and then again a few days before the shoot for the neatest result.

2. should i wear nipple covers with sheer lingerie?

No - unless you’d prefer to.

Lots of lingerie has sheer lace and mesh for a barely-there look, and you can usually see less details through the material in your photos than you see can in real life. If you want to wear nipple covers for modesty of course you can, but they don’t look as good on camera.

3. can i wear crotchless underwear in the photos?

Yes - so long as you feel comfortable doing so.

A lot of lingerie is ‘ouvert’ with a narrow opening or two overlapping layers of material in the gusset: with modest posing, you won’t see this at all in the photos. With more open crotch lingerie e.g. some bodystockings etc with a large opening, you can wear a simple thong underneath.

4. i struggle to fasten lingerie - can you help?

Absolutely - I’m happy to help.

Hooks and eyes, lacing, buckles, suspenders, snaps, bows, clasps… lingerie can be complicated! The fastenings that make underwear beautiful and supportive can also be very difficult to fasten, especially behind your back or in false nails or if you have limited grip or mobility. You’ll be changing privately behind a curtain, but most clients need a little help and I’ll be waiting outside so that all you need to do is ask if you need any assistance. We laugh that my skills of attaching stockings and adjusting bra straps are just part of my Fairy Godmother magic!

5. can i bring spicy props like handcuffs and paddles?

Yes - you certainly can.

We’re always happy to include BDSM props and kink accessories into your photoshoot in a way that fits our signature style and your personal fantasy or relationship dynamic. Recent photoshoots have included handcuffs, paddles, collars, rope, blindfolds, leg restraints and keys.

6. what happens if i cut myself shaving or get a spot?

Don’t worry - in our opinion, that’s what airbrushing is for.

Everyone has their own philosophy on editing or airbrushing photos, but our approach is very much “you on a good day”. When you book a photoshoot, you can guarantee that you’ll kick a table or cut your leg shaving - it’s just bad timing. So temporary blemishes like bruises, spots, insect bites and ingrowing hairs can easily be removed from the photos if you’d like.

7. can i do a boudoir photoshoot when i’m on my period?

Yes - and there’s no need to be embarrassed about it.

Internal protection such as tampons and menstrual cups are the easiest choice as they’re not visible for the photos no matter what you wear, but pads can also be hidden with clever lingerie choices. You can always pause the photoshoot whenever you’d like to visit the bathroom too. If you let me know beforehand or at the studio, I will also happily keep an eye out for strings etc to ensure they’re hidden - just like I watch out for twisted bra straps etc.

8. what happens if i need the toilet or medication during my shoot?

We can stop at any time and restart when you’re ready. We always make sure there’s plenty of time for your photoshoot, so if you need a comfort break please just say. However, visiting the toilet before you get changed and timing your appointment to work around your medication schedule etc can be useful to help you relax and enjoy the experience.

9. how can i ensure this is exciting for my partner?

There are so many ways!

Your photoshoot is a deeply personal experience, so our number one priority is always YOU. However, if you’d like to represent your partner in the experience there are so many ways e.g. borrowing a shirt or jacket from their wardrobe for a “Sunday morning” look, representing their hobby / passion / career with a prop or uniform, highlighting their favourite feature or wearing something special they bought for you. You could also use your photoshoot as an excuse to bring them to Derbyshire for a mini-break and make the most of your makeup and hair by going out for dinner etc after your photoshoot. We’re happy to recommend a range of places to stay nearby including cosy B&Bs, boutique hotels and quirky cottages.

10. i have no idea how to pull a sexy face - what do i do?

There’s no need to pull a face to be sexy.

During your photoshoot we aim to capture a whole range of facial expressions and it’s our job to help you in a whole range of different ways. Relaxed, seductive, fierce, thoughtful, flirtatious, or even a broad natural laugh - every facial expression can be beautiful because it’s a part of your personality.
